Unmöglichkeit IV – Revue

The circle closes with Unmöglichkeit IV – Revue. In this extravagant concert in the KINDL – Center for Contemporary Art, the ensemble itself becomes the object of examination. Open space. Decomposition and reconstruction. The art of music making in a collective. The four parts of the concert present works by Xenakis, Haydn, Vivier, Bach, Scelsi, Haas, Monteverdi, Lachenmann, Ockeghem, Gervais, Dufay, Claren, Beethoven and Moe.

The evening begins with a revue of 16 solos and leads into a retrospective of Kaleidoskop’s first ten years. This retrospective contrasts multiple facets of a single musician: the soloist; the dissolution of that position and the assertion of the multitude. The third part of the evening gives a perspective on the possibilities of music making – 16 soloists jointly play the mammoth work Maurizio/Licht by Sebastian Claren: the ideal of collective music making. The work weaves the musicians together in such a way that no single voice has preference over another, and presents an absolute collectivity to the audience in the course of a one-hour performance. In the fourth part of the evening, the musician Rashad Becker will compose a new work for electronics based on a recording of Claren’s Maurizio/Licht. The 20×20 meters glass facade of the Kesselhaus is fitted with sound exciters to transmit the music, which create a new instrument out of the structure of the building.

The Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop marks its 10th anniversary with a four-part concert series, Unmöglichkeit I–IV (Impossibilities I–IV). The series attempts to create a forum in which music is played with freshness and impartiality, in which the end of musical interpretation is sought and new beginnings are hazarded. Kaleidoskop questions the existence of an absolute, indestructible idea of musical work: at which point does sound become music? How can musical points of view be communicated? What are the inherent impossibilities in communal music making?

The ensemble and audience are invited to four different locations for visual art. Within the context of each location, the concerts explore new frameworks in which to listen and hear, searching for an auditory sixth sense. Each of the concerts – J’espère, Unbox, Alice, and Revue – has it’s own set, it’s own sound and aesthetic universe. The concerts are conceptualized as a complete series, but also as a set of four distinct performances. Every art space references and builds upon the previous one.
