The Sensitive Style II: Mike Tyson

Attachments

My biggest weakness is my sensitivity. I am too sensitive a person.

Mike Tyson

The two-part concert series The Sensitive Style is a celebration of the 300th birthday of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach – the most famous proponent of the ‘Empfindsamer Stil’ (sensitive style) – and uses the search for personal musical expression to draw a connection between the work of Bach and Helmut Lachenmann in the late 20th century.

The first concert, Lance Armstrong in October 2013, was centered on late sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, which can be seen as the basis of the ‘sensitive style’. The second concert, Mike Tyson, focuses on the birthday boy – C.P.E.’s six ‘Hamburg’ string symphonies are contrasted with Lachenmann’s monumental string quartet, Gran Torso, and a commissioned work by Evan Gardner, Echoes of my inertia.

It’s the best possible excuse for the highly sensitive members of Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop to be the first to congratulate Carl Philipp, flex their muscles, put on gut strings and show their softer sides! And of course, in good old Kaleidoskop tradition, it’s never just a concert…
