with music from Claudio Monteverdi’s Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria and Korean Gagok songs

Penelope waited half her life for the return of her husband. Yearning became her life’s real purpose. After years of war and aimless wandering, Ulisse suddenly reappears. But what does it mean when two people meet again after such a long time? What has remained of their former familiarity? Is a homecoming at all possible after all that they have lived through? And what does home mean for each individual? RETURNING HOME follows these questions, based on Claudio Monteverdi’s Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria and parts of the Korean song cycle Gagok.

Through the clash, interaction and connection of these two primarily different musical forms of expression rooms for something new open up, places to interact with oneself and the other, the difference from familiarity. Only the view onto the self through the lens of the other shows what the nostalgic idea of home means: a place of intimicy, security and comfort.
